Scooby Do Good

Thank you Warner Bros. for sponsoring this post. Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. Gang have teamed up with generationOn, the youth family division of Points of Light, to inspire, equip and mobilize kids, parents and Scooby-Doo fans to create meaningful change in their communities.

The boys and I had the opportunity to get out and lend a helping hand in collaboration with the good folks at Warner Bros. and generation On, to help promote change in local communities by channeling the spirit of Scooby-Doo with the 'Doo Good' campaign. Which is seeking to make service fun, help keep kids excited and inspired about donating their time locally, doing good for the sake of evolving community, and caring for the earth as a whole. It’s the kind of a cause I readily embrace with my boys at this age because I think it helps foster an early notion of staying connected to community when and however we can.

The four of us spent a warm Sunday afternoon with a crew bused in in a decked out Scooby-Doo themed "Mystery Machine" where we were put to work hauling dirt, pulling weeds, planting and tending to what will become an educational (edible) garden for an elementary school in L.A.

The project was headed and directed by Enrich L.A, who's defining goal is to work at having "a garden in every school" to engage students in Los Angeles to "cultivate and appreciate eating simple whole foods through hands-on lessons" by growing them. I can't praise the organization enough. My time with them left me super inspired by everything I learned about their organization over the course of the day. Particularly its founder - Thomas O Grady - a farmer's son from the west of Ireland whose passion for the art of gardening is downright infectious. It also reminded me of the simple fact of how good it feels to get out in the sun and into the dirt to dig and plant and see the seeds of something beautiful as your day's end result. My boys, and all of the kids participating worked hard and tirelessly till the end. It was the perfect way to greet Spring and introduce my boys to the perks of serving community.
