Some of my favorite things to watch Mike build over the years have usually been anything that include his concrete work, typically in landscape settings. Something about pulling the wood frames off and seeing the sleek lines carved by the bracing that is more satisfying than all the rest. And as much as I love the accents of hard concrete mingled with lush backyard landscape I've always hoped we could incorporate it into the interiors of a home one day because I love how it sets off an otherwise wood heavy, warm home. Noting, of course, that it does take a certain style home to pull it off, and hopefully at some point, we'll be lucky enough to find that.
In any case, I'm entirely obsessed. With concrete kitchens and other accent points in interior spaces that include bathrooms too for that matter.
Here, a few images I pulled off line which I'm keeping as inspiration should the right house come along and call for it, but I'm also wondering, from a practical stand point, what the end result of having this material as daily use would be. Obviously I've done more eyeing that research.
Another bonus in our case is how much cheaper a version like this could be considering we could design it and construct it ourselves as opposed to sourcing custom cabinetry which we all know can get pricey even in a small space. Plus how great would it be to include a few custom cubbies and shelving to accommodate kitchen utensils? Love the idea of open space inside the kitchen to showcase favorite and most used pieces in dish ware.
Styles below ranging from rustic adobe to sleek Spanish mod and all of them straight out of my interior dreams.
Do think kitchen or bathroom concrete floors would be pretty badass tho

Deleteuh huh. Grout just gets me in trouble; I scrub too hard and then... no more grout :O I love too when the concrete comes up and makes those cubby shelves and any other built ins. So dreamy
DeleteYour blog really hates that I like to finish thoughts in two posts lol. If I post something once, and then try to follow up it will delete my previous... Probably I should try to have a complete thought, but just letting you know :) Anyways, what I was saying is that your husband seems pretty darn skilled in wood working as well, and I'm inlove with raw wooden countertops. My thought being it gets rid of the need for most cutting boards, so thoughtless and easy. And being prone to natural things, I like that you can use vinegar and lemon for most cleaning, and beeswax/jojoba blend to seal. I like to maintain it, I find it relaxing, plus it's something the kids can do safely. what else... Oh! I said that you could certainly I think use your talents and expertise in some way to get the expenses down on the wood. I think Acacai is beautiful and has great character and much like with concrete having 'patina' over time, unfinished wood does the same :D And in case it deletes my above comment for writing this, kitchen and bathroom concrete floors would be badass

DeleteAnd, my second choice is a nice warm wood countertop. Can't ever go wrong there. And I love too the point you make about it being cleaned naturally.
Totally loving concrete for you guys. The fact that Mike can do it himself makes it seem like such a good way to save money while making something so chic. And with four boys, it just seems like a good choice...not too precious, able to hold up to whatever those kids will end up doing to them. I know a lot of people on Instagram talked about how easily they stain, but I think the patina tells a story and shows that it's a well lived in home.
