And the homework packet will work out. And the glasses will turn up. And the laundry will get done and the windows will be washed, and your sister will call you later to inform you of her relief in hearing that they are not in fact the dreaded bed bugs like she / we feared. And all will be right and somewhat ordely again, and tomorrow is just around the bend with the promise to take it a little easier on you, if you just take a breath, cease the moment, and believe in it.

Socks For Baby
On A particularly rough thursday morning, when nothing seems to be going your way and you're feeling like a full blown failure because you couldn't find a certain page in their home work packet when they needed to turn it in, or another boy's glasses (for the second day in a row) and you're on the phone with your sister who's in a real panic over the possibility of bed bugs having invaded her home, and you stumble upon your two youngest boys sitting quietly in one room, one singing, one cooing while the older is focused intently on getting socks on those two tiny feet because he thinks they might be cold, your heart starts to swell. In that single moment, that short sweet scene was all you needed to remind you of what you already know. That these days are tough, but fleeting. And that that baby, in his bright blue socks smiling lovingly up at his protective older brother, is all you will remember from days like these anyway.

Ohhh...this melts my heart...so so sweet! I want an older brother too :)
ReplyDeleteThis is just so sweet. This morning I woke up to a similarly sweet situation. My two boys were playing memory and my 7 year old was coaching my almost 4 year old to get some of his own matches, so he didn't feel so bad loosing to him. These little interactions have a way of melting your heart and making you forget some of the messes that may be lying around us at times.
ReplyDeleteso true. they make up for everything else that tends to consume us during such days.
DeleteThis was our Thursday too ... feels like a lot of days lately actually. Thank you for reminding me to look for the beautiful and the small in our days. It is so easy to focus on the mishaps and mayhem. xo
ReplyDeletetoo easy. too often sometimes, right?
DeleteSo beautifully said. Someone once told me one of the best gifts I could give my child is a sibling. I have found it to be so true over and over again. And your top photo is proof.
ReplyDeleteI would wholeheartedly agree with that.
Deleteso so sweet and so true. i really needed this tonight. your boys are the sweetest!
ReplyDeletethank you Jossie.

Oh man, so much this. Siblings are the sweetest. I often send my 3 year old upstairs when the baby wakes up to buy me 5 more minutes to finish up dishes/laundry/email and then I find myself huddled around the monitor listening to Quinn singing and Guthrie cooing, completely abandoning my project. All the stuff will eventually get done, and soon I will be convincing Q that we really do need to bundle up and go pick up his sister at kindergarten, but those special sibling moments are always the best part of my day.
ReplyDeleteI've been away from reading blogs for a month. your writing left me feeling calm and reassurance that I am not alone in this struggle of motherhood.
ReplyDeleteand Hayes! oh my goodness he's looking older than 6 months. just a dear baby boy. lucky mama.
well I am happy to hear you are back. And back here at that.
Deleteglad to hear it resonates, liz.
